Dental Implants - A game-changer for your smile and oral health

Dental Implants

Whenever you happen to be in casual conversation with family, friends and co-workers, it won't be any real surprise if the talk turns to dental implants. More than likely, at least one or more of your group has already received dental implants or they are seriously considering having the procedure done.

Dental implants are definitely on trend and, as you'll soon find out, they are about so much more than merely achieving that long-desired "Hollywood Smile". It doesn't matter whether you are a young professional who is seeking to elevate your appearance for personal and professional reasons or an active, vibrant senior who just wants to, once again, be able to chew and enjoy your favorite foods, dental implants are for everyone.

Over the past decade, implants have exploded in popularity across America. Our culture has recently placed a renewed emphasis on WELLNESS and that includes one's ORAL HEALTH. To find out if, potentially, you are a candidate for implants, make plans to have a conversation with your dental professional. If it has been a while since your last visit to the dentist, ( and we sincerely hope NOT), why not schedule an appointment right now?  Be proactive! A little preventive oral care can't hurt and it may save you pain in both your mouth and wallet in the near future.

There's no better place to start your oral health journey or quest for implants than at NY DENTAL ASTORIA. Headed by ARIS ROTSOS DMD, this practice offers a warm friendly environment, caring and compassionate care together with state-of-the-art dental technology. Implants are a specialty of the practice. Dr. Rotsos has decades of experience doing these implant procedures so you can rest assured that you will be in good hands.

Right about now, though, you may be wondering; exactly WHAT ARE implants? They are tiny posts ( made of titanium or ceramic ), that are surgically inserted into the jawbone where they serve as a solid foundation for artificial teeth such as CROWNS.  Think of these posts as a state-of-the-art " root  " for your brand-new tooth. By the way, titanium and ceramics are perfectly safe and they will not cause any adverse effects on the tissues of your mouth. Over a few months time, these implants will fuse with the jawbone in a process known as osseointegration. No worries; you won't need to know how to pronounce the word. Your dentist will take care of that and a whole lot more. And here's another reason why IMPLANTS are gaining in popularity: they are PERMANENT. With proper oral hygiene care, they can last a lifetime. And, they're SO convenient. Unlike cumbersome bridges or dentures, these restorations, for all practical purposes, mimic the look, feel and function of your natural teeth.

Aside from wanting to improve one's smile, most patients turn to dental implants in order to replace teeth that have been badly cracked or lost entirely due to gum disease, cavities, or bruxism, which is the grinding of one's teeth, which can literally destroy a tooth over time. Most people are not really familiar with bruxism so be sure to bring that subject up to your dentist. You could be grinding your teeth in your sleep and not even be aware of it. Losing one's teeth can also lead to the loss of bone in the jaw. Implants can help to provide stimulation to the jawbone which, in turn, guards against bone resorption while also maintaining the overall structure of your face and jaw. Most importantly, though, once implants replace missing teeth, you can enjoy chewing normally again and dig into those foods that you've been missing like corn on the cob and chicken legs and wings. You will also be able to enunciate your words better and speak more clearly with a full set of functioning teeth. Not to mention the jump in self-confidence that you'll feel with that sparkling new smile! Come on; you can almost hear those compliments coming your way even now.

The process for getting implants is fairly straightforward. You'll kick things off with a consultation. Your dentist will discuss your medical history and conduct a thorough examination of your teeth as well as do a few X-rays. The surgical procedure itself sees the implant post placed into your jawbone.  The procedure is done under local anesthesia, so you will feel only a very minimal amount of discomfort. Naturally, there most likely will be some soreness after the procedure but it's nothing you can't handle. Just keep thinking about the positive changes that are coming with regard to your appearance and health. Over the next three to six months, the dental implant will form an enduring bond with your jawbone. Then, it's time for the crown ( artificial tooth ) to be put in. Before that occurs, though, you won't have to be afraid to gaze into the mirror. Your dental professional will fit you with a temporary tooth replacement until the permanent restoration can be placed. A word to the wise: during the healing process be sure to check in with your hygienist or dentist.  Let them know about your progress and if something doesn't feel right. Remember, YOU are your dentist's PARTNER in your oral health.
